Beyond Buzzwords: What is Coaching?

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaching is often mistaken for other industries, but its unique approach sets it apart. Here’s how coaching differs from seemingly similar activities:

Consulting: Consultants solve technical or strategic problems with their subject-matter expertise. Coaches, in contrast, rely on coaching processes that enable clients to uncover their own insights and solutions.

Training: Trainers teach skills and share know-how. Coaches collaborate with clients to foster self-awareness, uncover strengths, and design transformative action.

Mentoring: Mentors share wisdom, personal experiences, and advice rooted in their experience. Coaches focus on evoking awareness and empowering clients to design their own paths forward.

Therapy: Therapists diagnose and treat patients, often exploring the past to address trauma. Coaching focuses more on the future, viewing clients as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole partners. While it can complement therapy beautifully, coaching is not a substitute for mental health care.

Motivational Speaking: Motivational speakers inspire large audiences with compelling stories and energy. Coaching is personal and collaborative, focusing on the client’s goals, insights, and growth. In coaching, the spotlight stays on the client—not the coach.
